Beloved......
Welcome to the Goods Read Crss blog where we take a dive into contemporary works of art with an intention to identify their key elements and highlight core concepts.
In this edition of the blog please join me as I attempt a close up of Toni Morrison’s beloved.
The beloved is based on the true life story of a black woman who in her days was a slave, her name is Sethe, who escaped from a Kentucky plantation with her husband and their children in 1856 after many years of torture and hard labor, they sought shelter in Ohio, the owner and law officers soon caught up with the fleeing family. However, before they could be recaptured, Sethe killed her young daughter, so as to prevent her from returning to the claws of slavery. Margarthe Garner characterizes as Sethe in the novel Beloved. Sethe is depicted as a devoted and passionate mother, who runs away with her children from an abusive owner know as “school teacher “, they get caught, but in an act of supreme and everlasting love with sacrifice, she tries to kill her children to keep them from being slaves. Out of Sethe’s children her 2 year old daughter dies and the school teacher believes that Sethe is crazy so he decides not to take her back.
Sethe later has beloved inscribed on her daughter’s tombstone even tho she had intended forbit to be dearly beloved. She did not have the energy to pay for two words, becoause each word cost her 10mins of sex with the engraver.
In the second part of the book, set in 1873, 17 years after, Sethe and her daughter Denver who is a teenager lives in Ohio at 124 blue stone road. It is haunted by the ghost of the child Sethe killed. however, with the arrival of Paul D the haunting appeared to reduced, he worked on the same plantaintion with Sethe, and they begin a relationship. Her short period of respite soon comes to an end when a young woman appears and introduces her self as Beloved. Beloved know things that might suggest she is the reincarnation of Sethes’s lost daughter. At a point, Beloved seduces Paul D, after this, he learns that Sethe kills her daughter, so he leaves her.
The situation at her house gets worse as Sethe loses her job and become fully concentrated on Beloved, who was pregnant at the time. While Sethe’s daughter Denver who is usually lonely befriends beloved, Dever begins to get concerned about Beloved. Denver declares herself to ask for help from the community and luckily for her she’s given food and a job. On a fateful day, Denver employer arrives to take her to work, and her mother Sethe mistakes him for school teacher her old slave driver. She tries to attack him with an Ice-pick. The other women restrained her and during the process Beloved disappeared. Paul D who left earlier on later returns to meet Sethe grieving and promises to take care of her and Denver. Denver continues to thrive at her work growing into an integral part of the community.
The novel beloved chronicles a woman’s labor of sacrifice in an effort to protect her young daughters from the claws of slavery. Beloved shows the relativity of sacrifice, why a school of thought opines that Sethe did the most motherly thing by taking her daughter’s life in an effort to protect her from slavery.
Another school of thought will blame Sethe for committing murder. This Novell shows the delicate nature of motherhood, it goes to show the most innate characteristics of motherhood; sacrifice. Child love, selflessness and the thing line that separates this sacrifice from misconceptions.
